CHAPTER SIXTEEN

CALLIE HURRIED TO CATCH up to Haven. She watched him punch the steering wheel and then rest his forehead on it.

What now?

She ran to Haven’s open door. “What’s wrong?”

He looked up at her, his jaw tight. “It’s dead.”

“Again?”

“Not even a hiss. The battery’s deader than I’m about to be.” He glanced at his watch. “Twenty minutes. No way can I get someone up here by then.” He pulled out his cell phone. “But I’m not giving up. Not yet.”

And neither was she.

Callie strode away from his car, drumming her fingers on her jeans. Although she could see Amanda’s house from the tower, it was too far to walk. Calling Mandy and pleading Haven’s case wouldn’t do any good either. Mandy was probably waiting like a vulture to capitalize on any mess-up from Haven. No matter the circumstances, Mandy would be unforgiving because then she could get everything her way.

So, who did Callie know that lived close enough to give them a ride? She pulled her phone from her pocket and scrolled through the contacts.

A name finally caught her eye. Yes. Perfect. The shop was four minutes away, max.

Callie hit the speed dial number and waited.

A familiar voice answered. “Anton’s Auto Repair.”

“Charlie?”

“Yeah, who’s this?”

“It’s Callie from Superior Suites. I’ve got an emergency up at Enger Tower.”

“Then dial 911, girlfriend.”

“No, not that kind of emergency.” She turned and looked at the car. Haven sat cheeks taut, with a phone to his ear while Reece dug in the dirt at the parking lot’s edge. “It’s my friend. He needs to be somewhere in twenty minutes, and his car won’t start. I think the battery’s dead. If Haven doesn’t have his son home in twenty minutes, he could jeopardize his visitation rights.”

“Oh my. I’ll be there in a jiffy.”

“Thanks, Charlie, I owe you.”

Callie hustled back to the car just as Haven threw his phone down on the passenger seat. Red lightning bolts streaked across the whites of moist eyes. “This is it, Callie, this—”

“Haven, listen, Charlie’s coming.”

“Charlie?”

“Yes. Her husband, Jayson, is the interior decorator at Superior Suites.”

He blinked. “The auto mechanic?”

“She’s the one.”

He slumped in his seat, closed his eyes, and rested his forehead on his fist. After a moment, he smiled up at her, his eyes still glassy. “Super Cal to the rescue, huh?”

“I’m not…” A hero. She looked down. With her foot, she drew an imaginary figure eight on the tar. She was just an ordinary woman trying to do what was right. That didn’t make her special.

Haven got out of his car, laid his hands on her shoulders, and his musky aftershave drifted her way. “You are to me.”

Her breath quickening, she peered at him through her lashes and swallowed. He was way too close, his aftershave too inviting, his lake-blue eyes too alluring. And those lips, have mercy, were way too tempting.

She backed away from his touch, licking her lips, and hugged herself. “I only did what anyone would do for you.”

“If you say so, Super Cal.” Smirking, he leaned his back against his dead car, placed one leg over the other, and crossed his arms.
